I dedicate today’s article to all traditional Kueh lovers in Singapore. Hands up if you are the one. If you are not the one, it’s ok. Hopefully, you want to try traditional Kueh after reading this article.
Let’s start with a simple question. What would you have in mind when you try to recall which traditional cake that you have ever tried before? Ang Ku Kueh? Nine-Layered Cake? or Traffic Light Cake?
I believed most people who were born in Singapore and stayed quite long in Singapore have tried those cakes.
But, have you ever tried Indonesian traditional Cake? No, I haven’t tried.
Could you give me a recommendation on which traditional Indonesian Kueh worth the calories? I personally like almost all of the Indonesian traditional cakes, so if you have asked me which one worth the calories, my kueh list would be very long. Hehehe.
So to make it simpler, rather than writing Kueh name one by one into a list, I will share with you one Indonesian traditional kueh shop that I know have quite a lot of varieties of delicious and mouthwatering Kueh to try.
The named of this shop is Ratu Lemper. Ratu Lemper in english means Lemper Queen. So, the spotlight of this place is obviously Lemper.
Lemper is a glutinous rice with spicy shredded chicken fillings and this Lemper is wrapped using Banana Leaves. I try their Lemper Ayam Pedas (Spicy Chicken Lemper). The spiciness level is shiok and this Lemper is delicious and interesting.
Other than Lemper, I also try their Pulut Kuning, Steamed Tapioca with Sambal Ikan Bilis, Putri Salat, Kue Kosui, Kue Bakar Pandan, Bika Ambon and Lapis Legit with Fresh Chempedak.
Pulut Kuning is a glutinous rice cooked with tumeric and coconut milk. They put beef rendang on top of Pulut Kuning and to complete this cake perfectly, they give you quail egg, tomatoes and Sambal Ikan Bilis so you can dip the Pulut Kuning on the Sambal Ikan Bilis. If you like beef, this Pulut Kuning is a must to order.
Steamed Tapioca with Sambal Ikan Bilis is a unique dish that I have never seen in Singapore. It’s a unique combination between steamed tapioca and sambal ikan bilis and amazingly delicious.
Lapis Legit with Fresh Chempedak is wow.. This is the first time I try Lapis Legit with Chempedak. Chempedak is fresh, especially when I eat it together with Lapis Legit, it creates a new delicious taste.
Putri Salat, Kue Kosui, Kue Bakar Pandan, Bika Ambon are equally delicious.
Overall, it’s a great exciting experience to try traditional cakes from Ratu Lemper. You should try it.
