I like to do culinary trip during my vacation. Of course it’s because i love to eat and trying new food that is specifically found only in those area.
This time, I visited Bogor. Bogor, Indonesia, is a city south of Jakarta on the island of Java. This place has a nickname of “Rain City” because of the rainy season and the chilly wind. The wind was not as chilled as the last time I went there. I believed it was because of the pollution and global warming. But, the weather was still absolutely better than in Jakarta.
Even though only for few hours, we managed to try few different types of Bogor food. Not bad, right?
For today post, I will share a unique Bogor traditional drink named Tuak / Nira water.
For some of you who know what Tuak is, please note that this drink is a non alcoholic drink. I was shocked when I heard the seller said this drink named Tuak because I thought the drink had the alcohol in it. How come they would sell alcoholic drink during daylight legally along the street?
This Tuak is made from Nira (Nira is a sweet liquid comes from the coconut plant stem or Aren plant stem or palm family plant stem that is fermented).
There is another interesting thing with this Tuak seller. Curious? He carries two giant long size bamboo tubes of Nira water (one on his back side and another one on his front side). He also put many ice cubes together with Nira water inside the tube to make it cold.
When you order the drink, the seller will pass you small drinking glass and you need to hold that drinking glass. After that, he will do a little attraction by pouring the Nira water from the giant bamboo tube directly into the drinking glass that you hold. He is 100 percent accurately pouring the Nira water into the drinking glass without fail. Very cool.
For the taste wise, you can taste a slight sweetness in Nira water. It’s very refreshing.
If you happen to be in Bogor and passing by this Tuak seller (nowadays, only few Tuak seller are spotted), do not hesitate to try this traditional drink.
