Searching for the Best Indonesian Bakmie in Singapore?

Are you wondering which restaurant in Singapore serves the best Indonesian bakmie (noodles)?

I’ve heard many people rave about a restaurant called Kulon, claiming it serves the most authentic version of Indonesian noodles. Some even say their bakmie is the closest to what you’d find in Indonesia.

Naturally, my dear and I were curious to see if it lived up to the hype. So, we decided to visit Kulon last Saturday around noon.

We were in luck—there weren’t many people when we arrived. But soon after we sat down, more and more customers started to fill the place.

Kulon offers a variety of bakmie dishes with different toppings, each priced accordingly. Here’s what we tried:

  • Bakmie Bangka ($8.20)
  • Bakso in Soup ($3.80)
  • Pangsit Goreng ($3.20)
  • Bakwan Goreng ($1.60)
  • Tempe Goreng ($1.60)
  • Teh Botol Sosro (Indonesian tea)

The Taste Test

The Bakmie Bangka features Indonesian-style dry noodles topped with braised sweet soy chicken and bok choy. The flavors were a nice mix of sweet and savory, and the noodles themselves were spot on in terms of texture and taste.

Overall, I thought it was delicious, but I have to disagree with those who claim it’s the closest thing to the Indonesian version. While it’s tasty, the flavor didn’t quite hit the mark for me in terms of authenticity.

The Bakso in Soup came with three beef meatballs and, in this case, I’d say the taste is quite similar to the Indonesian version.

The Pangsit Goreng (fried dumplings) were crispy and filled with a tasty shrimp and meat mixture. They were crunchy and satisfying.

As for the Bakwan Goreng (vegetable fritters) and Tempe Goreng (tempeh fritters), both were delicious and closely resembled their Indonesian counterparts. In this regard, I completely agree with the people who say these dishes are authentic.

What Do You Think?

Have you tried Kulon’s bakmie? What was your experience? Do you agree with me, or do you think it’s the closest thing to the real deal?
