Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie

Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie

My last trip to Jakarta to meet my dear was very fruitful in terms of hunting unique and delicious food.

We went to many places from street food, restaurants, hidden gems and even legendary food places that have already been existed from super long time ago.

Don’t believe me? Let me show you one of the example today.

For Indonesian people especially who stayed in Jakarta, who remember last time there was one Bao seller named “Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie” using wheel cart selling Bao on the road and almost everyday would pass by in front of your house around evening time.

Last time “Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie” was very famous and could be considered as King of Bao brand in Jakarta.

But because of the past tragedy and seemed like most of their family members were not interested to continue Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie legacy, nowadays, these wheel cart Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie sellers were gone without news (no longer passed by our house to sell the Bao).

Luckily I recently accidentally saw IG Reels about one person found one place was still selling this “Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie”.

So I asked my dear to accompany me to go there.

Honestly I was a bit sad after seeing “Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie” place because this place was far way beyond my imagination (not in a good condition).

I do believe most people pass by this place even without realizing this place is selling food.

It’s located at run down old building and in front of this place there was one Bao wheel cart and one medium size of “Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie” signboard.

Well, it’s quite scary if you visit on night time 😂.

Anyway, Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie is selling Siomay (Siew Mai IDR 13.000 around SGD1.30) and four types of bakpau: Special (IDR 26.000 around SGD2.60), Cincang (IDR 16.000 around SGD1.60), Casiau (IDR 16.000 around SGD1.60) and Tausa (IDR 16.000 around SGD1.60).

We ordered each of Bakpau type: Special, Cincang, Casiau and Tausa.

Bakpau Special contains minced pork and salted egg.

Bakpau Cincang contains minced pork.

Bakpau Casiau contains char siew pork.

Bakpau Tausa contains tausa a.k.a black colour sweet bean paste.

These bakpau is still made using old traditional recipes and is not using food-grade chemicals. Because of that, you need to heat it before eating it. If not, the Bakpau skin would not become soft. You can see my Bakpau pictures when I cut the bao to become two pieces (before I heat it).

I like these Bakpau so much. If you are a sweet tooth, you must try their Bakpau Tausa.

Overall, we were really glad that we could still tried these Bakpau again after so long and hopefully this Bakpau Siomay Asli Lim Thiam Kie would be survived forever.
