Have you ever heard of one legendary uncle who is always wearing pajamas while making and selling traditional butter coffee a.k.a. Kopi Gu You in Singapore? No idea? How about if I tell you the coffee shop name? The name is Heap Seng Leong. I believed if you stay in Singapore, you already know about this place and perhaps ever tried this Kopi Gu You before.
Heap Seng Leong is an old school coffee shop located at North Bridge Road. Heap Seng Leong is famous for their Kopi Gu You. It’s quite hard to find Kopi Gu You in Singapore nowadays.
Kopi Gu You a.k.a. Butter Coffee is a hot coffee mixed with condensed milk and a piece of a cold butter. The uncle put butter into hot coffee so the butter melt eventually. The butter will make coffee more fragrant and has caramelized taste. I truly like this butter coffee even though I normally don’t drink coffee. I usually get headache after drinking regular coffee but not this butter coffee.
Other than famous Butter Coffee, the uncle is also good at making Kaya Toast. The key for his nice toast is charcoal stoves. Using traditional way, He put the bread on the top of charcoal stoves and it makes toast slightly burnt. He put kaya and a piece of butter. It’s really delicious.
To make my breakfast complete, I also eat two soft boiled egg.
I really love the atmosphere at Heap Seng Leong and all of the things I eat and drink here.
I would proudly recommend Heap Seng Leong to all my friends. It’s really worth to try and be sure to order their Butter Coffee.
Personally I prefer to spend my times in this kind of old school shop rather than the hype fancy restaurants.
Please inform me if you know other old school food place in Singapore. Thanks
